If you are looking to sell your home, painting your house could be a good strategy to help it sell faster, as it can greatly enhance its overall appearance and attract potential buyers. First impressions are priceless, and painting a house can be beneficial when it comes to selling it for several reasons:
Improved First Impressions: A fresh coat of paint can significantly enhance the overall appearance of a house. It gives the property a clean and well-maintained look, making it more visually appealing to potential buyers. A house with chipped, faded, or outdated paint may discourage buyers, but a newly painted house can create a positive first impression. Talk with your Real Estate agent, a Professional Painter, or a Home Stager for color suggestions, as they have their finger on the pulse of home buying trends.
Increased Perceived Value: Painting a house can create a perception of added value among buyers. When a house looks well-cared for and visually appealing, buyers are more likely to believe it has been maintained properly overall. This perception can lead to higher offers or a faster sale. Most home buyers also want a home that is move-in ready.
Neutralize Personalization: Homeowners often "personalize" their living spaces with unique paint colors that reflect their personal taste. However, these choices may not align with the preferences of potential buyers. Color trends come and go, and it is usually best to use neutral colors such as whites, beiges, or grays. This allows buyers to envision their own style and easily picture themselves living there.
Address Maintenance Concerns: If the current paint on the house is peeling, flaking, or showing signs of wear and tear, it can raise concerns about the overall maintenance of the property. By repainting, you can address these issues and demonstrate to potential buyers that the house has been well taken care of. This can increase their confidence in the property's condition and minimize any doubts they may have.

Painting the Exterior of Your Home, provides an instant Face-Lift. But it is important in a four season climate like the Grand Rapids Michigan area has, to take certain things into consideration.
Wait for the Right Conditions: The Temperature Should Be Above Freezing and Stay There for at Least 24 Hours After Painting. Avoid Painting in Extreme Temperatures, Especially Below 50°f (10°c), Which Can Affect the Paint's Ability to Dry and Adhere Properly.
Prepare the Surface: Before You Start Painting, Make Sure the Surface Is Clean and Free of Any Loose Paint, Dirt, or Debris. This Can Be Done by Pressure Washing or Using a Wire Brush to Scrape Away Any Loose Paint.
Repair Any Damage: Inspect the Surface for Any Cracks or Holes, and Repair Them With a Filler or Caulk. Make Sure the Surface Is Smooth and Even Before Painting.
Use the Right Tools: Invest in Good Quality Brushes, Rollers, and Paint Sprayers to Ensure a Smooth and Even Finish. Use a High-Quality Paint That Is Suitable for the Surface and Weather Conditions.
Use the Right Type of Paint: Choose a Paint That Is Specifically Designed for Cold Weather Conditions. These Paints Are Formulated to Dry and Cure Faster in Lower Temperatures, and Stand Up to All Four Seasons.
Prime the Surface: Apply a primer before painting to ensure better adhesion and durability of the paint.
Apply Thin Coats: Apply thin coats of paint to avoid drips and achieve a smooth finish. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
Protect Surrounding Areas: Cover windows, doors, and any other areas you don't want to paint with plastic or tape to protect them from accidental splatters.
Follow the Weather: Avoid painting in extreme temperatures or during rainy or humid weather. Choose a dry and mild day for the best results.
Don't Paint in Direct Sunlight: Avoid painting in direct sunlight, as this can cause the paint to dry too quickly and not adhere properly.
Clean Up Properly: Clean your tools and equipment thoroughly after painting to prolong their lifespan and prevent any damage.
By following these tips, you can ensure a professional-looking exterior paint job that will last for years to come.

How often should I repaint the exterior of my home?
This is a question we get asked a lot, and the answer is, it depends, on 2 basic things:
Your homes location
The materials used
Some homes could need to repaint the exterior in as little as every 4 to 6 years to keep it looking good. Others homes can go as much as 15 years before any repainting work needs to be done.
How often you need to repaint the exterior of your home depends on a few variables: where you live, the type of materials your house is made with, and the quality of the materials used for the project.
Location
Here in West Michigan, we can get temperature extremes - brutally cold winters, and hot humid stretches in the summer. These can do a number on not just your exterior paint, but whatever is underneath it on the side of your home. Especially if your home is in the open, the sun's ultraviolet rays cause the chemical compounds in paint to degrade. This is especially true if you prefer dark paints, which will appear to lighten more quickly than white or light colors in the sun. The weather can also cause paint harden, blister, crack, and mildew can form as well in damp and shady locations.
Materials
Older paints, in particular oil-based paints, can also degrade much faster than todays much improved paints, like acrylic latex paints. They come in glossy, semi-gloss, and satin finishes, with great choices for any home exterior.
Also whatever your home is using for siding, is a big factor. Todays siding choices help paints last longer, while older materials tend to require more paint upkeep.

With summer here in Grand Rapids, plenty of time will be spent on outdoor decks and patios. But with our lovely four season weather we get, those decks can take a beating! Stained wood decks are beautiful, but they do need to be cleaned and restained from time to time. There are 4 basic steps to staining a deck
First Step - figuring out if your deck actually needs re-staining. If the stain still repels water, the old stain is working. You may just need a good cleaning and come back next year.
Second Step - if it does need to be stained, it still needs a good cleaning. You need to take care of mildew stains, dirt, debris and any contaminants that have worked their way into the wood. Then let it dry.
Third Step - Choose the right stain. You basically have 4 choices:
Clear Stain
Semi-Transparent
Semi-Solid
Solid
Fourth Step - Apply the stain, but don't over apply it, one good coat is usually enough.
With time and patience, your deck can look beautiful, but if you would rather have a professional do it, give us a call! Our team at Service Pro Painting and Improvements can get your deck looking great in no time!
So you have decided to repaint some rooms in your home or business, Regardless if you do it yourself, or hire a professional team like Service Pro, there are a few steps you have to take to get the rooms ready.
Get everything out of the way. Painting around furniture makes a job much more difficult than it should be. Get all the smaller stuff out of the room, and bigger items like couches and beds, move to the center of the room. Find something to cover any items left in the room, you don't want any paint splatter or dust on your valuable furniture.
Remove any switch plates and electrical outlet covers. You want to get the paint in behind those areas as well.
Put something over your floors, tarps, plastic, something to protect the surface underneath.
Dust and clean the walls. A clean surface is essential for a good finish. Using a vaccuum or towel should do the trick for dust. Any grease or grime needs to be removed as well.
Scrape and remove any cracked or flaked paint. Now is also a good time to fill in any holes or sand down any imperfections
If you are not sure what color you want to use, most quality paint shops will also allow you to get little sample paints. Take a few samples, and paint a couple of small test areas on your wall. It is amazing how different a paint can look in the light of your room, as opposed to just a color swatch in the store.
And before you paint, protect any wall sconces or adjoining surfaces with painters tape.
Taking the time to properly prepare a room, will lead to much better end results!
Secrets of Pro Painters
aka what you didn't know before that DIY paint disaster...
We live in a DIY age, where with the help of a few Youtube videos, we can all be brain surgeons... When it comes to painting a house, whether it is the interior or exterior, sometimes you can do it yourself, but sometimes, you should probably leave it to the pros...
Some of the most common mistakes we run into:
Not moving everything out of the room
Some of the bigger items, like couches and beds can sometimes be worked around if they are properly covered and moved away from the surfaces to be painted. But everything else must go! Especially if any sanding will be involved, as the dust can get into everything
Not preparing the surfaces properly
You have to find, and then fix, cracks and dents. A new paint surface, especially if you use any glossy paints, will highlight those imperfections you missed...
Sanding the old surface. Sometimes you need to "scratch" the old surface, to give the new paint something to bond to. If you just paint over an old surface, you risk the new paint just peeling off easily. Know when and how this must be done.
Wash the surface to be painted. If you did sand, you can't apply the new paint to the dust you just created...
Properly caulk and seal cracks. again, these will really show up after the new paint job, if not taken care of properly
Use the right primers and paints. Every surface is different, and interior paints and exterior paints are different as well. Make sure you use the right paint for the right environment. And that "bargain" paint you saw on sale... might not be a good choice long term. Use quality paint.
Use the right equipment. Good brushes, good rollers, good ladders. This is not a good time to skimp on the equipment you use
And it goes without saying, but practice and repetition go a long way to making a paint job look good. Some people are naturals, and do a great job of painting. Other people, should probably just leave it to us!
